Hell, Disease & The Body 

As I was reading Dante's Inferno it occurred to me the only punishments horrifying to a modern day viewer were the ones that dealt with disease or inverted the body.

At the same time I had an art book with illustrations of disease progressions before modern medicine, and I realized the closest thing to hell we have on earth may be a disease overtaking your body and there's nothing you can do about it
